What is a “kawaraban”?
During the Edo Period breaking news was often printed and sold in the form of single sheets of paper. The plates were carved in clay and baked like roof tiles, kawara, so the newspaper was called kawaraban or “roof tile prints.” Plates were more often made out of wood, but the name kawaraban remained.
